After watching the movie, a nagging thought (of way too many) why is BB-8 so fucking useless? It has to be at least 20 year newer technology, right?

Kinja'd!!!

BB-8 is fast for sure. But R2 could pilot and do all sorts of cool shit and fly son small bursts- BB-8 just rolls and looks cute and Monoric.

It’s basically an accidental bouncing ball USB container with a Taser. When the Millennium Falcon is flying without a copilot, the best it can do is bounce around uselessly... why? Why is he loaded to the X-wing with Poe if he cannot do piloting? Why is the unit walking around when everyone is looking for it. I didn’t see if BB-8 has a tactical component in Poe Dameron’s ship like R2D2 always had. Minor Rant. Thoughts?

Oh, and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Whatever floats your boat, and a Jalop New Year. The wife got me this. She’s a keeper. The Phaeton, Kizashi, 330Ci Coupe and 3000GT VR4 Spyder will all share this toy.

I think BB-8 is there just for kids to look at. But at least he isn’t annoying (Jar-Jar)

R2-D2 couldn’t pilot either. Astromechs are primarily mechanics, with some basic copilot functions like nav tacked on.

Hmmm, I seem to remember perhaps on Clone Wars Series (Cartoon network) R2-D2 was able to be the ‘cruise control’ of Anakin several times. But in the movies, yes, you are right, we don’t see R2 piloting by himself. And in the scene when the Millenium falcon was launching and falling apart, BB-8 doesn’t even fix a damned thing.

That seems pretty plausible. Maybe something to do with being jacked into the ship? I seem to remember that the droid gets hardwired pretty significantly when they ride along in a starfighter, but I’d have to double check. Also could do with the complexity of the piloting being done.

EDIT: Looks like his head comes off for Naboo starfighters but not for X-wings

He tracks in the sand well, R2 wouldn’t be able to move despite them showing him in the desert.
